On Sunday morning Trim took on Wolfe Tones in Gibbstown in the final of the Division 2 U-19 football league.
The Trim team, captained by Colm O’Rourke, played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half but it was the home side who made the brighter start and they scored points in the first and third minutes before a fortunate goal put them into a 1-02 to 0-00 lead after just 5 minutes. Rian Collins opened the scoring for the Trim men before Daniel Fox fisted a point after a fine run along the end line. Trim then responded to a Wolfe Tones point with a Daniel Fox free and a fine score from Cormac Slattery leaving the half-time score Wolfe Tones 1-04, Trim 0-04.

The second half got off to the worst possible start for Trim when Wolfe Tones won possession from a Trim kick out and the following move resulted in the home sides second goal of the game. Trim kept in touch with another Daniel Fox free and a point from play from James Murray. The game seemed to be slipping away from Trim when Tones scored the next 3 points from play which moved them into a 2-08 to 0-06 lead after 13 minutes of the second half.
Indeed Wolfe Tones could have been out of sight but for the heroics of Trim netminder Liam Kearns who made a string of fabulous saves. Another Daniel Fox free and a second Rian Collins point reduced the deficit to 6 points. It was the introduction of Cormac Walsh in the 19th minute of the second half that swung the momentum in Trim’s favour. Walsh’s 3 points from play in just 5 minutes brought Trim to within a single score of Wolfe Tones.
Tone’s thought that they had sealed the victory when they goaled in the 25th minute, however a fine Trim move ended with a sublime finish from Walsh with his shot from the edge of the square finding the top corner of the net. Trim battled bravely but could not find the second goal required to draw them level and a late Tones free sealed victory on a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-11.
