Early Lapses Cost Gallant Trim Dearly
A lapse in concentration in a five minute spell in the first half, which saw Summerhill notch 2-3, proved to be costly for a very brave Trim division 6 senior football team in Trim on Friday night (20/3/26) when they eventually lost by the narrowest of margins on a 1-13 to 2-11 scoreline.
Trim scored first in this match when Conor McKeown shot a point in the fourth minute after a period of Summerhill pressure which saw them kick two wide s before they hit target with a goal from a crossbar rebound in the 7th minute from Sean Hughes. A minute later a rattled Trim conceded another goal after a good Summerhill move which split the Trim defence wide open and Conor Summerville smashed the ball to the back of the net.
Three further points stretched the Summerhill lead as Trim struggled to move the ball into attack. Slowly Trim regrouped and it was Darragh McLoughlin that gave that chink of hope when he finished a great move from the Trim defence through midfield to the Summerhill net in the 20th minute. This settled Trim and they added three further points through two Neil Sweeney frees and one from play after a great run from Daryl Phelan in the last ten minutes of the half. Summerhill added two in the same period to leave the half time score Trim 1-4 Summerhill 2-5
On the resumption Summerhill stretched their lead with their first attack and shortly after Darragh Tormey added a second point before Trim responded with two fine points per the ever accurate Neil Sweeney (free) after a foul on Daniel Fox. This was followed by a great point from the impressive Aonghus Short.
A better organised Trim made it difficult for the Summerhill attack and may of the weaknesses of the first half were rectified with Cian Downes, Daryl Phelan, Darragh McLoughlin marshalling the defence and mid fielders Rian Collins and Caoimhin O’Neill shutting off the supply of the ball to Summerhill forwards. Despite this Darragh Tormey got a beautiful two pointer and shortly afterwards a free saw Summerhill stretch their lead further to seven points.
However Trim’s organisation and determination started to bear fruit from the 16th minute with a point from a Neil Sweeney free. The same player was involved in the next point in a good move with Rian Collins. Daryl Phelan got in the act shortly after with a long range point. Evan Collins then made a great individual run through the heart of the Summerhill defence before pointing again. A few minutes later Sean McKiernan narrowed the gap to two with a fine shot.
Trim were unlucky not to score two goals in the last five minutes of this match. One move saw the ball pass right across and open goal and go narrowly wide. Another was cleared from the line when a goal looked certain. The relentless pressure brought another point for Trim per Conor McKeown with less than three minutes to go and there was just one separating the sides.
Crucially Summerhill managed to move the ball up the field and score a converted free to widen the gap in the last minute of ordinary time. To Trim’s credit they did not give up and laid siege to the Summerhill goal again. They were rewarded with a free which Mark Murray converted. Trim maintained the pressure on the kick out and again won a free at an awkard angle to the left of the posts and Neil Sweeney failed to convert as the referee sounded the full time whistle to a Trim 1-13 Summerhill 2-11 scoreline.
Despite the result Trim can take great heart from the overall display and the never say die attitude.
