Trim and Oldcastle faced off in Division 6 of the football league, with the match delivering plenty of drama and excitement for supporters. Trim got off to a flying start, as Caoimhin O’Neill struck for a goal just 20 seconds after the throw-in, setting the tone for what appeared to be a dominant opening. Daniel Murray added a point in the second minute, and Neil Sweeney followed up with another in the fourth minute, capping off a flowing move from Trim’s defence.
Trim maintained their control as Caoimhin O’Neill pointed again in the eighth minute after some slick passing, leaving Oldcastle on the back foot. However, Oldcastle burst into life between the 11th and 14th minute, scoring three goals and a point in a whirlwind spell. Brian Hetherton was instrumental, netting two goals and a point, while Cormac Fagan chipped in with another major. Oldcastle added a further point in the 16th minute, swinging momentum in their favour.
Trim, rattled by the sudden reversal, took time to regroup. They exchanged points with Oldcastle (including a Daniel Murray free) in the next two minutes before Evan Collins produced a crucial goal to steady the ship. Trim’s resurgence continued, adding four points before the break, through two Neil Sweeney frees, a fine individual effort from Darren McLoughlin, and a well-taken point by Caoimhin O’Neill. Oldcastle registered two more points in this period.
At half-time, the scoreboard read Trim 2-10, Oldcastle 3-5, reflecting a fiercely competitive encounter with both sides showing spells of quality and resilience.
Oldcastle signaled their intent immediately after the restart with an Eoin Smith point from the throw-in. Neil Sweeney answered quickly, collecting his fourth point of the day for Trim. The match tightened as Oldcastle added further points to level the teams, then seized the lead with two frees converted by Mikey Timmons, as Trim’s defence struggled to contain the lively Oldcastle forwards and conceded a series of frees.
Neil Sweeney narrowed the deficit to two points shortly afterwards. Trim gradually began to impose themselves on proceedings and were rewarded with a superb goal from Rory McCaffrey in the 24th minute. Caoimhin O’Neill then added a brilliant two-pointer from a dead ball, and Mark Dempsey and Daniel Murray (free) contributed further points, consolidating Trim’s advantage.
Oldcastle pressed hard in the closing minutes, registering four more points, including a two-pointer with the last kick of the game. However, despite their late surge, it was not enough, as Trim held on for a hard-earned two point victory on a final scoreline of Trim 3-17 to Oldcastle 3-15.
The positive that Trim can take from this game, apart from the victory itself, is the resilience they showed to overcome some serious setbacks. A lesser team would have wilted in a situation where they conceded 3-1 in a two minute period. Trim didn’t, they fought on to restore their lead by half time.
They can also take heart in the great passages of play with slick, fast handpassing moves and good finishing. If they could maintain this for sixty minutes in any match nobody will be able to stay with them.
Lots of this team are showing themselves as potential first team players in the not too distant future if they dedicate themselves to their training and coaching.
