Trim welcomed Kilmainhamwood on a sunny and warm Tuesday evening to St Loman's Park for Round 10 of the Div 5 football League. Right from the throw in Trim dominated the first half aided by excellent play in Midfield from James Murray and Cian Walsh who won the early exchanges and provided the forward line with great support. The initial minutes saw the Trim team push for and execute some fine scores from Mikey Cole, Conor McKeown and David Boyle. Kilmainhamwood responded with a brace of points but at this stage Trim were dominant, the defence stood strong and turned possession over on many occasions proving to be the perfect platform for the forwards to attack, which they did with a superb goal midway through the half when Mikey Cole found the net at the end of a fantastic move. Trim's defence continued to dominate the opposition and Trim forwards added further points from Gary Fleming , Mikey Cole and a 45 from Goalkeeper Eoin O'Reilly, to leave the score 1-6 to 0-3 approaching half time. On what proved to be the last kick of the half Kilmainhamwood got back into the game through a very fortuitous goal, under pressure from the Trim defence, the Kilmainhamwood forward hit a speculative off balance shot across the box which found its way to the net and bring the half time scores to 1-6 to 1-3 in Trim's favour.
The second half begun as the first ended with a Kilmainhamwood goal to level the scores and lift the spirts of the away team. Trim fell behind by two points and responded well with a fine score from James Murray who was continuing to win good possession in midfield, supported by the very energetic Neil Sweeney, Patrick Quigly, Conor McKeown & Mark Murray. Trim were beginning to weather the early storm when they lost three players to injury David Boyle & Jake Carolan from defence and forward Mikey Cole who all had to leave the game injured and in this period Trim were reduced to 14 following a Black card for Conor Hurley for a mistimed challenge. Kilmainhamwood took advantage as Trim regrouped and scored a number of fine points to eek out a 4 point lead. Trim responded well and saw another fine score from James Murray close the gap but the visitors with a League Semi final at stake defended well in numbers and despite constant pressure from Trim held on for the win.
It was not the result the Trim men deserved but a performance to be proud of, the team mixed with youth and experience delivered an excellent performance against Kilmainhamwood's first team, pushing them all the way. The Teams defensive performance and the work rate from every Trim man was impressive, with this effort brought to every game there will be many happier days ahead !
