Trim travelled back to Bective on Saturday last for the 3rd round of the Premier 2 Championship to face local rivals Simonstown. Simonstown who started the day top of the Championship table were looking to secure a Knockout place while Trim were seeking to improve on recent results having lost by a score or two in their recent games. The game began slowly in the belated but welcome summer sunshine, both teams looking nervous on the ball and making handling errors. Trim settled the better after a fine opening point from Neil Sweeney but Simonstown responded well with two points from play. Trim then won a free which Neil Heffernan slotted over with ease and this was then followed by a goal after a wonderful move from defence to be finished by the ever-reliable Neil Heffernan. Unfortunately for Trim they lost both Mikey Cole and Neil Heffernan inside the first 10 mins to injury. There then followed a period of dominance from Simonstown who scored 1-0 5 with just the one point in response for Trim from Aonghus Shortt who had to replace M Cole.
Half Time Trim 1-03 Simonstown 1-07.
Trim came out for the second half rejuvenated and determined to get back into the game and were quickly on the scoreboard with three fine scores from the returning Sean Foley (N Heffernan) who got great support from Owen McGrath, Conor McKeown & Gary Flemming. Simonstown were quick to respond with 3 points of their own in what was a very entertaining and competitive championship match. As Simonstown tried to pull away the men in Red and White defended excellently with Cian Downes and Conor Hurley impressing. Trim kept fighting back with scores from Mark Murray, Owen McGrath and another Foley point this time from a free. With time at a premium, Trim were determined to close the gap and a goal from the impressive Foley followed by another point put pressure on Simonstown. Trim had two further points both from frees expertly taken by Foley and as the clock passed the 66th minute Trim had turned a 7 point deficit into a one point lead. The Trim forwards were impressive and got fantastic support from the midfield duo of Mark Murray and Cian Walsh. Somehow the man in the middle found more time to spare and awarded Simonstown a 45 in the 69th min which was excellently taken and scored but it was to be the last play of the game. A fantastic game of football with some outstanding individual displays.
Final Score Trim 2-11 Simonstown 1-14.
