A bright but chilly afternoon set the stage for our U17 LGFA team’s league opener against Simonstown. These teams have a history of closely contested battles, and this encounter was no different.
⚡ First Half ⚡
Simonstown launched the first attack, but C. McLoughlin’s interception denied them an early breakthrough. Trim transitioned quickly, moving the ball fluidly up field. A well-worked move set up N. Slattery for the opening goal after just five minutes. Trim’s defence stood strong against Simonstown’s counterattacks. E. Sloan broke from the back, setting up Mya Donoghue, who calmly slotted home Trim’s second goal.
Simonstown converted their first chance after 10 minutes with a well-worked point from a set play. Trim responded swiftly. E. Sloan’s clearance found A. Hannon, who linked up with Slattery to fire home her second goal. Simonstown won their kick-out but lost possession in midfield, allowing C. McMorrow to send the ball over the bar for her first point.
Just as Trim looked to pull away, Simonstown forced a penalty, which they converted. The remainder of the half was played at a blistering pace. C. Bell, N. Slattery, E. Murray, and K. McMahon kept the scoreboard ticking. Murray added a goal after 20 minutes, while McMahon and Slattery chipped in with points.
At the break, Trim led 4-04 to 2-03, with Simonstown still battling hard.
⚡ Second Half ⚡
Trim wasted no time after the restart. Winning the throw-in, half time substitution L. Cosgrove, with her first touch of the ball, found space and dispatched the ball into the net within the opening minute. The depth of Trim’s squad was even more evident as substitutes K. Garry and K. Ashe made an immediate impact, fighting for every ball.
Sustained pressure saw points from C. Bell and E. Murray, followed by two quickfire goals from C. McMorrow. K. McMahon added another goal with 15 minutes to go, putting the game firmly in Trim’s hands. Simonstown refused to back down and earned a second penalty, which they converted, along with several well-taken points.
However, Trim remained in control throughout. S. Kennedy, S.h Ryan, and E. Sloan were rock-solid in defence, while fearless goalkeeping from C. Barry and A. Hannon ensured Simonstown never gained a foothold.
In the final moments, the ball transitioned quickly from the back line through midfield, finding A. Glennon up front. Glennon’s pinpoint cross was met by L. Cosgrove, who slotted home her second goal of the game—a fitting finish to a dominant Trim performance.

👏 A special mention to Sarah Caulfield, captain of our Adult Ladies Div 3 team, who spoke to the players after the game to congratulate them. A classy touch from a true leader.
