JLD ACCESS LIMITED Senior Hurling League, Div 1, Round 1.
Final Score: Trim 1-10; Kilmessan 3-13
Kilmessan continued their fine run of late with a comprehensive victory over Trim at a blustery St Loman’s Park on Thursday evening.
Playing with a significant wind advantage in the opening half, the visitors had built up a decisive lead before half time and they maintained this advantage right up to the final whistle. Trim, to be fair, were probably more at a disadvantage due to player absence because of County duties and their relatively young squad kept up the challenge despite their adversity.
The visitors had raced into a comprehensive lead of 2-2 to 0-2 by the ninth minute, the Trim scores coming from James Andrews and Conor McKeown, whose fierce drive might just as easily have ended up in the Kilmessan net. Although the scoring rate had dropped off significantly, the next three scores were from the home side through Conor Quigley (0-2,2f), and James Andrews leaving a slender enough three points between the sides.
However, Kilmessan finished the half with a late flourish of five unanswered points with the trustworthy Mark Horan converting a couple of frees and the speedy Lorcan O’Connor completing the scoring in injury time.
Half Time: Trim 0-5, Kilmessan 2-7
An early pointed free from Conor Quigley reduced the arrears slightly but Kilmessan notched up another goal and three points without reply and the game was virtually over as a contest by the seventh minute. Trim did shade the fourth quarter by 1-4 to 0-4, with points from Conor Quigley (3, 2 ‘65s) and a much sought after goal from James Andrews, which was the first time that Trim had found an opponent’s net in four matches.
Despite this setback there were some encouraging performances especially from the younger players like Alex Fox, Cathal O’Reilly, Pauric Walsh, Josh Ayton, and Luca Taheny.
With Spring very much in the air, hopefully these matches will provide a valuable learning curve for greater things ahead.
