Trim Impress in Windswept Duleek

Trim scored an impressive 3rd round Division 2 football league win  against the home side in windswept Duleek on Saturday 5th April scoring an impressive 3-16 to the home side’s 0-13. The gale force wind was always going to be a factor in this match and Trim were lucky  to get the advantage of it in the first half. They lost no time in taking advantage of it with a Conor Quigley point from the throw in and a series of attacks which saw them score a further three points before Duleek replied with their first score, a point, in the 8th minute.
Trim responded well with a great move from midfield which saw the ball moved  through five Trim hands before Daire Lynch buried it in the back of the Duleek net and David Lernihan scored a massive two pointer. This proved to be the pattern for the remainder of the half when Trim moved the ball quickly from defence to attack to score a further 1-7 to a single point in reply to leave the score 2-13 to 0-2 at half time.

This opening half was as complete a display of football from a Trim team as we’ve seen for some time. The defence was magnificent as they repelled every attack that Duleek could muster. Gerry Dwane, man of the match Daire Lynch, Conor McGinley not only cleared their lines but  set up many attacks in intelligent passing movements.  Tadgh Carty and Jack McGowan lorded it at midfield and won many of the Duleek kickouts to keep the  pressure on constantly throughout the thirty minutes.

The forwards as a collective were superb for most of the half with Conor Quigley, Daire Lynch, Sean Foley, Brian Bolger and David Lernihan particularly prominent in this opening period.
Half Time Duleek-Bellewstown 0-2  Trim 2-13

The second half proved to be a tamer affair as Trim concentrated on holding their lead, avoiding conceding a goal that might give their opponents some momentum. Like Trim in the first half they opened the scoring within the first minute with a point. Daniel Fox, making his debut, was unlucky not to register a major minutes later as the Duleek goalie dived at his feet to deflect his shot for a 45. From the subsequent 45 Sean Foley got the breaking ball and pointed.

Duleek added a further four points without reply over the next 10 minutes. Just as Duleek looked as if they might get the momentum they needed they conceded a penalty which Sean Foley coolly sent to the back of the net. The remainder of the half saw Duleek score two, two pointers to one point for Trim  to see a final scoreline of Duleek 0-13 to Trim 3-16

While Trim didn’t look as spectacular in the second half they did the job they set out to do, to contain and confine Duleek’s scoring potential. The defence continued to harass and harry the opposition and pressurise them into mistakes and missed chances. Midfield continued to dominate and the forwards played their part with plenty of tackling and contact throughout the field.

This win sees Trim in second place in the division, one point behind leaders Navan O’Mahony’s.
