League Leaders crush Trim
A blistering opening ten minutes in which they scored 2-4 without reply saw St Mary’s overcome Trim comfortably in this Division 6 Premier League match in sunny Trim on Thursday night (22nd May). While Trim played well at times over the 60 minutes they lacked the physicality and teamwork to trouble the east Meath side.
Neil Sweeney registered Trim’s first score in the eleventh minute but they had to wait a further 11 minutes before the same player registered their second score from a free. The final ten minutes of this half saw Trim play their best football when they scored four points to one for their opponents to leave the half time score Trim 0-6 St Mary’s 2-7. One of the Trim points was a brilliant long range 2 pointer from David Boyle.
The second half scoring was opened by St Mary’s who registered two points without reply in the opening 5 minutes. Josh Harris, introduced as a sub in the second half, replied with a point in the 7th minute. Just as Trim seemed to be getting a foothold in the match St Mary’s struck with a goal and two points. Neil Sweeney responded with two points and Josh Harris with one. But that was as good as it got for Trim as St Mary’s scored goals in the 22nd and 24th minutes to end the game as a contest as the sides swopped a few scores before the referee sounded the final whistle with the score standing at Trim 0-11 to St Mary’s 5-13.
This is St Mary’s first team and they are league leaders having won all their previous matches. Their scoring average is 26 points for and 13 points against so the result is not out of line with St Mary’s record in the competition.
As in previous matches Trim had some good individual displays but lacked the teamwork necessary to trouble St Mary’s. Cian Downes, Mark Murray, Harry Harlin and Karl O’Dwyer were impressive in defence. David Boyle continues to impress and Adam Donohoe is improving from game to game. In the forwards Neil Sweeney, Josh Harris, Georgie Douglas and Liam O’Raghallaigh also caught the eye.
